Course Description
It's All About the Process
Unlike most other classes at SBJHS, this class is almost entirely group work. At the start of the year, the entire class works on concepts of film theory and composition (various types of shots and their purposes, editing techniques, etc.) Students then work in teams to navigate the three stages of film production, taking each video produced from a raw idea to a finished product. Along the way, they serve as screenwriters, producers, designers, actors, and editors. It is absolutely essential that the students learn the balance between being responsible for their own work and compromising with others' ideas and actions. At the close of each project, the final results are uploaded to Mr. Lashua's YouTube channel for the world to see! Many of the best students from this class often go on to the MAD (Multimedia Arts Design) Academy at Santa Barbara High School. Unfortunately, due to a decline in enrollment, this class will not be offered for the 2023-2024 school year.
Pre-ProductionStudents construct a film from its earliest stages. Beginning with a theme from Mr. Lashua, each group pitches a proposal about their idea for a film. Once approved, the film is scripted, storyboarded, and rehearsed. Filming locations are scouted, and props and costumes are acquired or created.
|
ProductionThis is the actual filming stage of each project. Students use their iPads to film on location around campus and create their unique stories.
|
Post-ProductionAfter filming has completed, students upload their footage to iMacs in Mr. Lashua's classroom and get to work in their personalized editing lab. They trim and crop footage, add sound effects, titles, and transitions, and grade their final product with Mr. Lashua before uploading it to YouTube.
