Fall 2022: "A Midsummer Night's Dream, or, The Night They Missed the Forest for the Trees"
Almost exactly two years since we had had a live performance on the stage of the Marjorie Luke Theatre, and it seemed only fitting to bring back a crowd-pleaser like "The Rules of Comedy!" This also marked the revival of our collaboration with State Street Ballet's Library Dances, and students enjoyed a unique blend of Shakespeare, dance, and comedy. It was bittersweet, however, as this was also our final show under the careful guidance of Mark Johnson, 18-year veteran technical director of the Marjorie Luke Theatre. Overall, the show was well-received, and the transition back to "normal" live theatre performances reached its completion. |
Spring 2023: "Sister Act, Jr."
The scramble for a new technical director was completed just in time, but we were able to welcome Steph Sandler to the team and produced a fantastic show with "Sister Act, Jr."! Most of the students had never heard of Sister Act before auditions, so this was truly fun from the educational standpoint. A delightful twist from the films is the musical takes the story from 1990s San Francisco and places it in 1970s Philadelphia. 100% of the charm of the movies, but now with a disco twist! Needless to say, this proved to be a strong finish for our theatre program, as the cast and crew brought an infectious joy to the stage that will be remembered for years to come. So infectious, in fact, that a collaboration was struck with the music department for "Maycation," a hybrid of theatre and the annual spring concert, where the students guest-starred with the finale from the show one more time, and then went on to make a similar guest appearance in the high school choir's spring concert, too! |
